The Design

The client needed an online store selling literature and other tools for helping professionals. I created this using the WordPress platform and an E-commerce system plugin, the combination of which enables the website’s owner to manage a full scale web store without needing any more knowledge than is required to write a blog. Visually I kept close to the style of the existing website, with some web 2.0 style updates to the general look and feel.

Hardings Jewellery, a new company based in the UK who sell high end jewelry (that’s why the word jewelry is spelled different in their name), contacted me to design their website. This was a very enjoyable and challenging project in which I got a chance to make use of the power and versatility that the WordPress CMS can provide.

The Design

This website is packed with features. The client wanted a fully working E-commerce site to sell their products that would encourage potential clients to put trust in their knowledge - an essential part of selling high end jewelry. A brand identity was already designed, so I was ready to use this to its full potential and add some great technical functionality.
Because this site was built using Wordpress as a Content Management System (CMS), Rachael and Chris can log in to their site and update their inventory, add content to pages and edit aspects their site without having to know a thing about web design, all the technical work is taken care of!

Key Features:

Wordpress CMS

Mootools sliding category menu and space saving page devices

Full e commerce system complete with special offers, smart shopping cart, AJAX powered images and loads of other features

Spam protected AJAX contact form

“Buyers Guide To Jewellery” with illustrated information on everything from assessing diamonds to ring sizing

Javascript slideshow with easily replaceable images

The usual web standard XHTML and CSS

Robin Cameron approached me to re brand and redesign the website for her company Life Inspired, a coaching and counseling service for people dealing with burnout. I redesigned the website from scratch, as well as a blog and a new business card design.

The Design

With lots of useful input from Robin about her favourite visual design trends, I created a cool, contemporary design incorporating calming beachy blues with some subtly retro geometric patterns that had just the right amount of fun. I worked with Robin to consolidate and restructure the content on the site so as to make all information as clear and to hand as possible. I also set her up a Wordpress blog with a design that complemented the themes on the main site. This means that Robin can now post articles about her work and life to her blog any time she likes, while the website remains focused on promoting her practice.

Key Features:

Extensive logo and branding redesign

Stylish Mootools tool tips for terminology

Home page animation

Custom WordPress Blog Design

Web standard XHTML and CSS

The Chatterbox, creators of a game aimed at teaching kids life skills, needed a website redesign. They were happy with the style of their site but it needed a total architectural redesign with cleaner code and better features.

The Design

I reproduced the Chatterbox site according to the visual style of their products and how they wanted to be presented: lots of white space, and with everything the customer needs no more than a couple of clicks away. The main challenge here was replacing a cluttered and malfunctioning navigation menu with something clear and easy to use with all the information needed at hand, and that was compatible with a range of internet browsers. Other ways I improved the site:

Tidied up redundant code

Converted from outdated HTML to web standard XHTML and CSS

Installed JavaScript modal boxes for stylish and functional display of images

Set up PayPal shopping cart

Improved site structure

Search engine optimization

Browser compatibility

Header slide shows displaying news items

Graphic design improvements

The Chatterbox website now functions as it was meant to, as an online store, marketing tool and resource that has been instrumental in improving the business of chatterbox games.

The Design

I combined military themes such as camouflage backgrounds with bright day-glo paint splatter effects on this design to create a look that was eye catching and conveyed the excitement of the game, bearing in mind that my target audience was 14-24 year olds, mostly male. The website features a scoreboard section where the scores of the monthly club meet held at the park are posted where players can view their ranking. Also featured is an image gallery with javascript “lightbox” style image display. In terms of the coding of the site, I paid particular attention to search engine optimization to give the park a boost in exposure as well as the usual attention to detail in browser compatibility and usability.

Iwas asked to build a mini site for the Lake Weslemkoon Conservation Association. The site, located within the LWCA main website is intended to gather facts for and promote an upcoming book about the lake and its history. Users can browse the site and see what information the book creators are gathering and contact the association with suggestions and contributions.

The design

Visually, I kept the site quite simple as apart from promoting the book to patrons of the lake, the site’s purpose is as an information gathering tool. I utilised a vertical un-ordered list as a navigation, which is slightly unconventional but it works very well at displaying the numerous links to pages on the mini site.
